The flap to access the oil filter is too small in my opinion. I always remove the whole tray to avoid spilling oil in it.
No offense, but you're doing something wrong - I've never spilled oil into the tray. If you need to, use a small bungee cord to hold the flap back while you're changing the oil.

Removing only the 4 flap bolts will save you a bunch of time (it's also how the dealer service shops do it - they don't take the entire skidplate off).
