I have a story to tell. Being a Harley owner with loud pipes, The local police last spring were on a campaign to stamp out loud pipes. They and a guy from the DOT armed with a sound meter showed up at the waterfront, one of the biker hangouts. The deal: have the noise measured and no tickets would be issued. The standard set was the noise had to be below 88 db at three feet behind the tailpipe. A few guys get tested and failed. No tickets as promised. It was suggested the stock police Harley get tested. The cops complied. FAIL! Then a guy with a stock Gold Wing gets tested. FAIL! Well, you talk about embarrassed cops and DOT inspectors. For the remainder of the riding season, very few were stopped by the cops for having loud pipes and I have yet to hear of any convictions in Halifax. A friend also beat a ticket for wearing an 'illegal' helmet because the cop doubted the DOT sticker was genuine. In court, the cop couldn't disprove that the helmet didn't meet DOT standards because he was not an expert in helmet testing. FAIL! Case dismissed.
