Although the increase in horsepower would not affect performance by much in real world settings, it is still important in this big pissing contest.
I see so many guys here in So Cal with exotics pushing out 400-600 horsepower that can't drive the car at all, but they still want to say they have that much power.
From a marketing standpoint, the HP numbers, 0-60 time, etc. definitely provide talking points and do generate interest. They make for magazine coverage and get people on the lots.

Mazda RX8=178HP per litre.....great handling car, but goes to show how numbers on paper can be deceiving.
