I just did the above and everything, and you still need the key in the "fobgina" ( ) for it to acknowledge you're authorized.
So yeah, your keyfob needs the battery to work.

Yep, you're right. I got my memory wires crossed on this one. The battery can be completely dead or even removed, but you still need to insert it into the fobgina for the car to start. The manual only references if the battery is low, so it kinda implies that you still need some tiny bit of juice in the battery in order for it to work. But that's not the case.
