Try opening the door using the button. The trunk should behave the same way too. If that works then... well, just now you go right next to your car and use the buttons. Isn't that how most people do it? I never actually press anything on the fob.

I'm not 100% sure because it's been a while since I conducted this little experiment, but I want to say that hitting the button to unlock the door did not work. So if your battery were dead, you'd have to detach the key from the fob to gain entry. But once inside the car, you can just put the fob back in your pocket and hit the start button as usual.
