If the lights are on then every 3 or so washers of the windscreen (I can't remember exactly, it's a bit random) automatically washes the lights too. It's a requirements on all cars with Xenon headlights in the UK. I think it's because there is a risk the lights will dazzle oncoming traffic because it's such a concentrated beam.
On the 350Z there was a specific button to wash the lights as well as the random/automatic feature.
When the washers are activated the water pressure pushes out the washers in the bumper and they make a mess as they squirt soapy water all over your bonnet. At the same time you struggle to see where you are driving as your headlight beam is dispersed!
