With people, however, with our larger and more elastic brains, bad upbringings can be overcome. With dogs, once they're set on a certain path, there's very little chance of them changing. So I understand why your family had to put that dog down. At least that dog isn't suffering anymore.
I have a friend that breeds pit bulls. All of his dogs are very friendly, great with kids, and have never behaved poorly.
