That's the trouble... lots of variables. Plus if the guy is already at speed it still takes a bit of time to get up to his speed and accelerate away from danger. I'm sure in this case the closing vehicle was pretty close and the OP felt like the only way to avoid an impact with that car was just to get out of the lane.

Now if he was driving a five point o--

Really, though, I think the OP made the best heat-of-the-moment decision he could and it looks like the situation has been resolved for the best with the car being totalled so he doesn't have to drive around in a Z that was pieced back together. So now the question is... what's next? Another Z or something else.
