Don't get too whipped up with a new car until you know it's totaled. Otherwise it's a whole repeat cycle of death, dying, and bereavement to get over the bad news that the car is still yours. Assume it's yours and you're going to have it repaired...then anything else is just gravy. A neighbor advised me recently that I should have hit the sides and back of the car before the appraiser came out. Totaling a car means you either have to hit the living $hit out of one side or just moderately bang up a couple sides.
