I think it really just depends on the kid. My first car that my mom got for free from a friend was a 1980 Toyota Corola (5 spd). I didn't like this car one bit and shortly after getting my license I started driving my dad's 1978 280z which was my primary car for several years.

I am currently 25. My dad let me drive his 2004 350Z quite often if he wasn't going to be using it (Mainly on weekends) when I was 19-20 and I never did anything crazy with it. I generally stopped really driving it once I got my 2006 Subaru impreza non-turbo (lease).

Funny enough I totaled the impreza when it had less than 400 miles on it but it wasn't because of the way I was driving it but just got in an unlucky situation (gravel or something on the road in a mountain pass). There were two cars in front of me and due to that I was breaking in the entrance of a turn (which shifter the weight to the front -- bad) and the rear end went out on me. I have never had that happen on the second impreza I got a couple months later to replace the first one so something on the road must have made me lost traction. I compensated like a 2wd car which made me go off the edge (rolling down the hill) totalling the car.

Luckily I was near the base of the road so I wasn't that far up and didn't fall that much (30-40 ft).

A picture of the subaru after I totaled it:

I wanted to get a 350z at the time but the reason I got the subaru was I was only working part time and going to school and that was all I could afford. I got a full time job shortly after that when I was 21 and finally could actually afford to get a 350z if I wanted to.

I figured I would go ahead and wait for my lease to be over before I went with a 350/370z due to how much they wanted to charge me for getting out of it (4 year lease). Sadly enough the engine died on me 1 week b4 my lease so I ended up just buying the subaru (cash) and I still need to sell it. Guess its good I kept on to it as my dad's 350z just had engine failure and he has been using my subaru until his 350z gets fixed =)

Anyway a long story but I think I am pretty responsible. I have a pretty nice car (IMHO) and a house at the age of 25. I think it was probably good I waited a bit on the 370 as it allowed me to have a lot of money saved up to get my house. I think it really depends on the person and some 18-19 year olds are probably responsible enough to have a 370z, I know I would have been.

That being said I think the said person should be driving a car with no more than 200 hp for atleast 2 years before going with a high powered sports car. Also I think they should learn on a manual as IMHO people who start and drive a manual everyday typically pay a bit more attention when they are driving than those with automatic (just talking out of my *** here).
