Well, or they decided that if they park next to you, they have you, and a possible unknown to worry about on their other side.
If they park next to the island, they don't have you, just the unknown, which couldn't be avoided anyways.
I think their motive was more selfish than altruistic/polite. Of course, this flies in the face of my earlier assessment.
