Put yourself in that position. It's a bit of an awkward thing to say. The GT-R owner could have been to 50 different track days and replaced his job with a track membership for his retirement. Or he could have just gotten the car and was a little self-conscious about it.
If I had been the GT-R owner I probably would have responded negatively as well. I don't take kindly to anyone, even someone JOKING, about how I drive, or play guitar, or do just about anything. Plus, you can never tell when someone really has an underlying meaning behind what they're saying, implying that they truly are a better driver or that you're incapable of driving that automobile. It can easily make a lot of people upset and that could lead to poor decisions.
I usually just say "hey, nice car" or something along the lines. Just be glad he didn't go all fast and furious on you like these previous posters are doing lol.
