Nissan Motor Co. (NSANY, 7201.TO) posted a 27% jump in U.S. auto sales for November, growth that outpaced what other top auto makers reported earlier Wednesday as it also posted a 55% surge in truck demand.
Japan's second-biggest car maker by worldwide sales volume after Toyota Motor Corp. (TM, 7203.TO) reported it sold 71,366 vehicles in the U.S. in November, up from 56,288 a year earlier and 2.3% higher than October. Car sales climbed 13%.
Sales at Nissan's larger namesake division grew 25%, while Infiniti climbed 45%. The Frontier, Armada, Rogue and Versa saw big gains.
November had 24 selling days, one more than last year.
The industry has benefited from improved sales of trucks and other large vehicles, a trend that has continued for months. Earlier Wednesday, the Detroit Three all reported double-digit increases in November sales, while Toyota, which has struggled amid its massive recall in early 2010, posted a 3.3% decline.
Nissan, which is outsold by peer Honda Motor Co. (HMC, 7267.TO) in the U.S., is counting on its soon-to-be-launched Leaf electric car to create a new image for the company. Meanwhile, powered by a hunger for cars in China, Nissan last month posted a nearly fourfold increase for its fiscal second-quarter profit.
The company's American depositary shares rose 3.7% to $19.45 in recent trading amid a broad market rally.
