Honestly... I don't think they were necessary, but it helps the end sit flush. You could use a clip, or some double sided tape to help it... I used one of the screws that came with the packaging just to be safe.

It wasn't going anywhere before.. but if anything, the sides won't squirm around and scuff up my paint.
