Yep, after many attempts with a radiator hose and vice grips, that's what I did
and even then, it was still hard to unthread. Just make sure that you have someone help you so that you can hold the shaft with another set of vice grips.
You will be putting a lot of torque on it and don't want that transmitting through the stick down to the tranny.
