If you really want to make the tips look nice, go to a hardware store and get a bag of 0000 steel wool. It's a really fine grade wool that is used for polishing metal and wood finishing (I use it for polishing metal guitar frets). The polish alone won't cut through that gold tarnish. It sounds crazy to use steel wool, like it will scratch up the metal, but it really won't. Here is a picture of a bike I sold recently that was 12 years old. The entire exhaust was gold and spotty and it came out looking new. Used the 0000 steel wool and Mother's polish, followed by an old t-shirt to clean up all the polish and buff everything to a shine.
