You won't regret either choice. The Auto in the Z is still a slushbox, but it really is a good transmission. Nissan should really offer a dual-clutch set-up.
As far as being faster, it really depends on who's driving, especially with a manual trans. Just about anyone with a right foot can get consistent pulls with the auto, but the manual will require a lot more skill to launch properly. I've also heard the 6-speed being faster and vice-versa, so you can't really go by that assumption.
Also realize that the 6-speed transmission is on the noisy side.
In the end, I personally went with the manual because I like rowing thru the gears and you feel more connected to the car....and isn't that one of the main reason you would choose a sports car in the first place.
