Personally, since I insist on working on and tuning my own cars exclusively, it is the sense of accomplishment after going from power level A to power level B on my own effort and skill alone. That's the only reason dyno numbers even matter to me (well, unless I happen to be setting a record ).

Track times are nice to track your progress as well. Definitely a good before and after, and they can definitely net you some bragging rights.

But the biggest component for me is the adrenaline-pumping experience that ensues when you press the loud pedal on your project car. And the noise... ah yes.
