I always thought the key fobs sent some sort of signal to the car but maybe its based on sound since it works through a cell phone.

The weird thing is that cell phones transmit a rather narrow audible frequency range, 200-3500 Hz. That means that it should only be passing signals that you can hear. How can this work with a transmitter that uses a radio frequency?
