it does require a new transmission as the gear position sensor is in the transmission attached to the shift linkage. the shift linkage between the two transmisions, the upper case cover, and the sensor are all specific to a sport package car. the transmission also has it's own part number specific to the sport package. i gues you could take a sport package tranny appart in order to grab the upper shift rods, cover, sensor, and the attempt to retrofit them into a non sport package car but it wouldn't be worth it unless you had an entire junk sport tranny and a good non-sport. the sensor is inside the transmission not the shifter.
