IMO if you go to a regular barber, the $5 or 20% rule should be just fine. If you go to a higher end salon or something, tips are going to be commensurate with stylist experience and really whether or not you actually like them.
Typically 20% works for men. If this was LA or NY you might tip more at a high end salon, but otherwise 20% works.
