Those laws probably vary state to state, but yes, I had to have proof of insurance as well before I left the dealership.

(Side story: they let me use one of their computers and I was so excited I went to sit down on the very edge of the leather chair at the desk. It was a really slick leather. To the floor I fell, right on my butt. )
