I definitly recommend doing some HPDE events. For the cost of attending a few weekend events, you will get as much track time and as much experience as attending a much more expensive Skip Barber or Panoz Racing School. The added benefit is that you will become more comfortable in your car and will understand more which modifications you will want to make that are worthwhile.
NASA has a great program with alot events around the country that are pretty reasonably on prices. Starting out it will be a bit more expensive since you will be provided a ride along instructor. When you do, take FULL advantage of having him/her along with you. Ask as many questions as possible and pay attenion.
Are you planning on coming up for our Z Nationals event in late September? If so, we have a HPDE event on Friday that you should get in on. The track we use is very user friendly, with wide grassy run offs in case you get in trouble. We also have instructors on site for beginners/novices, to ride along and help them get accustomed to the track.
