The cover you're talking about has 16 bolts and 3 snap-clip-thingies, it's sealed all the way around its edges and through the middle once. You pretty much have to remove the whole thing regardless. I can reach all the bolts with the car sitting level on the ground though, and I found an oil pan of sufficient capacity that will slide under there as well, so I think I'm all set for doing the change without touching a jack.
