Not sure which iPod you have, but Apple changed their voltage requirements from 12v to 5v. This requires a different charger and an older 12v charger will not work with newer iPods/iTouches/iPhones. There are a number of different car adapters you can buy out there that will convert the current and are backward-compatible with older iPod models. Just do a Google search on 5v ipod adapter.
