No, that is definitely not the case. Wax DOES NOT make paint shine. Wax protects the shine you get FROM POLISHING. A wax like the Americana will give you shine more depth, not make it shinier. MSW will protect your shine and make it appear to be more shiny because it has properties that will hide the very minor flaws in your paint.
The less damage that you have in your paint, the more shiny it will appear to be. Thus you can see how each product brings something positive to the process, however, neither is responsible for creating a shine.
Think of it this way. Does car insurance make your car look any different? No, but it will protect you from any kind of damage that may occur, just as wax protects your car from various types of damage that may fall from the sky (be it bird droppings to UV damage). Insurance protects you and your car, but it does absolutely nothing to enhance it's appearance. Wax is almost exactly the same, with the subtle difference being the fillers in a sealant and the depth that carnuba paste waxes provide.
The bottom line, wax is a protectant, not a shine agent.
