Yah, you'd need to remove the piece off the car to clear coat it separately. The material forms with heat so not sure how that affects bonding with the clear on a hot day(?).
To me the convenience of overlays is it can be applied without trim removal.
Going to be working on the HU trim today...since I can't use my heat gun (HU has touch screen and don't want to take apart my stereo again) it will not be wrapped around. Will see how well it turns out.
I have my doubts but if it sucks I can always peel it off.
