You'd be really surprised at how much energy that little foam piece actually absorbs.

If you look at the current NASCAR Sprint Cup cars, they run a foam block like that on each door panel for extra protection in side impacts with the wall. It really makes a difference!

From a safety standpoint I would definitely rethink the design. I don't think it's worth it to compromise your safety for a marginal power gain.
