Good filters have an anti-drainback valve, so I guess this comes down to: does that sandwich plate route the oil as pump->filter->cooler->engine, or pump->cooler->filter->engine? If it's the latter, then the cooler will drain back into the oil pan and need to be refilled before you flow oil to the top again (unless you add another one-way valve to the system at the sending hose to the cooler).
