A lot of times you have to be careful dropping new speakers into the stock radio, since the stock amplifier in the radio tends to be rated just for the setup that is in the car. The factory speakers might have a unique impedance or are low wattage. In the case of different impedance you could blow the amp in the radio. In the case of low wattage the radio amp may not be able to drive upgraded speakers and they can sound worse than the originals.

Most installers will want you do do both (speakers and head unit/amp) just so they don't have to know each cars unique stock stereo specifications.
