Chuck Taylors are some of the best driving shoes I've ever used IMO.
As far as shifting.. Normal driving I usually shift anywhere between 2500-3500rpm depending on the situation.
As far as the powerband goes...there is truth in that. But you have to look at it from both sides, if you shift higher when you get into the next gear you'll be closer to the powerband potentially then if you would have shifted earlier to get out of the powerband where it ends. The powerband ends at around 7200? To be honest I don't really pay attention to that when I'm shifting higher in the RPM, I'm a little more concerned with the road than the difference of 300rpm on the top end.
