There's no magnet. There's a separate thing (not the white one that the lock operates), it's a spring-loaded black rubber locking plunger thing, and you can push on it with your finger and it should alternate between open and closed positions.
In the Service Manual on this site, DLK.pdf page 231 has the fuel door exploded view. On that diagram "(1) Fuel filler lid opener actuator" is the white tab that actuates when the remote door lock/unlock is hit, and "(5) Lock and Rod Assembly" is the spring-loaded locking plunger thingy (covered in black rubber) that actually pops the door open (or not).
