You might see if a local auto parts store such as an Autozone or equivalent has a OBDII reader you can use to check the code you are throwing. Then at least you'd have an idea of what is the issue and work from there. It doesn't sound like a gas cap issue to me but the OBDII would let you know. Being normal depends on what the nature of the code you are throwing is. For instance if it were gas cap related, then yes. However, if it was a hose or sensor problem then I'd say no.
