This is a Nissan 370Z seat shown. When you get into an accident the force of your body pushes against the lower part of the two rods holding the headrest and aids in preventing whiplash. When you are seated and push your head against the headrest (yes, they really should have some angle adjustment rather than being a fixed vertical position) the lower assembly will push against your back.
