The only way for someone to get hurt is if they don't follow the big important direction of where the jack stands go underneath the car. You also have to use the correct jack stand for the weight of the car. The chance of a jack stand breaking is very very very small. Now, if you're using a scissor jack then there is a chance it will collapse and hurt someone, never get underneath a car using only that. I have seen scissor jacks collapse but never a jack stand.
