Three police officers slain in Pittsburgh, reports say
Quote:
(CNN) -- Three Pittsburgh police officers were killed Saturday after they responded to a call about a domestic dispute, two CNN affiliate news stations reported, quoting police sources.
WTAE-TV and WPXI-TV reported the shooting deaths. A suspect is in custody.
Police spokeswoman Diane Richards said five officers were wounded and would not confirm any deaths, saying "there are several families affected here."
Richards, who spoke at a news conference, said medics were unable to reach the wounded officers while the standoff was under way. She said she didn't know what prompted the shootings.
Police Chief Nathan Harper planned to hold a news conference to release more details at 3 p.m. ET at police headquarters.
Harper, who spoke briefly to reporters, said the suspect is in his early 20s, was firing from the window of his home with weapons that included an assault rifle and had lots of ammunition.
His mother was inside the house at the time, Harper said.
"Our negotiators finally spoke to him and he did surrender," the police chief said. iReport.com: Are you there? Share your story
The suspect was taken to a hospital, and Harper said he didn't know the extent of his injuries.
The standoff began shortly after 7 a.m. and ended about four hours later at a home in the Stanton Heights neighborhood of the western Pennsylvania city. Up to 80 shots were fired at a time, Richards said.
City, county and state police officers -- some clad in riot gear -- were on the scene as a police chopper hovered overhead.
