Ok, since we're throwing out theories... Widmore was testing to see if Desmond would survive the EM, which would be verification that they are in a parallel existence... because Desmond is immortal in all but the true time/existence, as Widmore somehow knew... Widmore also wanted to 'awaken' Desmond to the reality of his various existences. Desmond is 'not ready' to handle all the truths about branching realities, which will cause problems in the final episodes... and if Desmond is 'not ready' then it doesn't bode well that he asked for the manifest and decided that everyone else needs to be enlightened about the branched realities... perhaps by 'enlightening them', he dooms them to the island in the first place... Desmond's existence on the island has become aware of the many branches and seeks to converge them or close off that branch... those that exist permanently on the island seek to guard against that branch being closed off
