New transmission = NO gear noise...
So, got the car back after 2 weeks at the dealership. The transmission was replaced under warranty for grinding going into 6th gear. Transmission replacement was the easy part for the dealership....the i-Keys weren't working (had to use manual key to unlock doors and put the i-Key into the keyslot for the car to recognize the key was present). They replaced the i-Keys, the body control module, and then finally discovered a missing pin in the BCM connector (which still didn't fix it), then replaced the immobilizer antenna and the i-Key receiver antenna. My car really gave them a fit trying to diagnose and fix it.
Anyhow, the original transmission was VERY VERY noisy. Lots of gear noise, real noticeable in neutral at idle, the clunking with gear changes, etc. The typical 370z stuff that lots of people have posted before. It's all been like that since day 1.
With the new transmission, it's so quiet I really can't even hear it, minimal knocking and clunking with gear changes, no gear noise and near silent at idle in neutral. It's amazing how much quieter it really is.
Guess that first transmission really was just FUBAR from the get-go. This one, after 50 miles or so, seems to be WAY WAY better.
