Intermediate blinking on an LED, causes:

1) lack of current to drive the LED (bad connection)
2) reached the junction temp limit on the Diode, and the LED does not really turn off, its just looses power and you can barley see it.

As far as melting... I really doubt its LED related.... sound more like a short happened... An LED will die, before its temp hit enough to melt plastic... and The few LED's which can produce plastic melting temps without dying (Cree MC-E, Luminus PhlatLight, and the 6 dye Oshram)

These type of LEDs are used on headlights because of their high intensity... not for mid or low intensity applications.
