I didn't think the volt was ugly. But 40K is still steep for that car. We're not talking terribly expensive battery packs here... 40 or 60 miles on Lithium Ions doesn't cost as much as everyone's been b!tching about. Thunder Sky sells them at about $17K for 33KwH. (And those are old prices too) So that'd be about 180-200 miles depending on how efficient the car is. So if you factor in the prices that GM is getting the batteries at, they're likely spending less than 3K per car for the batteries. 5K for the motor/controller, and 1K for the ICE engine. There's no transmission. They're probably spending 13K total for the entire car including labor.

40K is a lot to ask in this economy for a car that only cost them 13K. If they were smart, they'd put the car's MSRP at around 28K.
