First Wrecked 40th Anniversary?!?!?!
As much as I hate to say it, that title may belong to me gentlemen. Was sitting at a light on my way to work the other day and was rear ended by someone who wasn't paying to attention to what the hell was going on!
Fortunately the parts that were damaged can be removed and replaced with new parts. Right now I'm looking at a new rear bumper, new driver side tail light and new exhaust since that ended up being bent and possibly any damage that was done underneath the bumper that i can't see. Thank god that no body work needs to be done at all. I was not injured because she wasn't going very fast but it still pisses me off to have it happen to a car that has less than 3000 miles and it being so limited. It's been 3 days now since it's been at the body and let me tell you they have really sucked!! This mustang that I have as a rental makes me realize how much i truly enjoy driving my Z on an everyday basis. Once the body shop sends me pictures of the damage I'll post them up here for all to see. I would have taken some myself but I don't own a digital camera at the moment. |

Sorry about this happening to you.
My theory why this is potentially happening to owners: The 370Z taillights provide a forced perspective of movement and our third brake light is lower than the top portion of the rear taillights. The taillights give the illusion of forward movement by tapering off into the horizon. The 350Z breaks-up this illusion through having the third brake light at the top of the rear hatch—your vision stops there with a definitive horizontal light bar. Our third brake light is low (and under the rear wing on the sports package) when being viewed by a taller vehicle or a fast approaching vehicle. This is my theory and I welcome others to constructively critique it (except Nissan's corporate shills, lawyers, PR and marketing). Our taillights are literally pointing forward. The best taillights that convey the most definitive statement when lighted are Ferrari's. Circular, vertical to the plane, unmistakable visual indication—at any speed. The 370Z's taillights are more a stylistic statement versus form follows function.

They trail off as if in a vanishing point. I really need to do a pictorial on this as I was able to demonstrate my theory with another member with both a 350Z and 370Z present. They convey the illusion of forced perspective, but in the sense of a vast horizon ahead leading your eyes ahead versus terminating in a definitive manner. I believe that the mind's interpretation of the taillights is altered into believing that it is more than it should be. My wife tells me she is constantly leaving space ahead of her so that she can tighten up into the space as vehicles keep getting to close to the Z. This is her number one pet peeve with the Z; next comes the overtly large side mirrors. I used the Ferrari reference as Ferrari truly understands style, but they are also keenly aware of function. The 370Z is a very stylish automobile, but style has also trumped many aspects of the 370Z's function. My neighbor has a 599 GTB and the styling carries so well with its function too; a stark contrast when compared to the 370Z. (Yes, I know there is a bit of price difference, but the function of a vehicle is not something that should be associated with the price of a vehicle).

My theory is that for most people, trying to stop while texting, talking to the passenger next to you and/or trying to change your clothes, read a book, put on your make up all make it pretty difficult and darned near inconvenient to stop for anyone who may be at a stop light. Thank goodness nobody was hurt but I feel your pain and hope that I can dodge all those distracted drivers when the time comes.

I really don't know what the lady was doing, she admitted that she just wasn't paying attention. The reason i was rear ended though was because there was a city bus stop just on the other side of the light, the light turned green the 2 cars in front of me and myself moved forward some and came back to a stop because the bus stopped in front of us to pick people up. I don't know if she was originally stopped behind me the first time and sped up and didn't notice the bus or she was already moving and just preceded to hit me.

Without question. When I find the time to markup some rear photos of the 350Z and the 370Z showing the what I mean, it should be clearer what I am getting at, but you've got it, so I will clarify for others. The fog light is a more definitive shape and placed where on-comers will take better notice, but it can also be a visual nuisance...a Catch-22, by all respects.
