They aren't that specific either just match your year up. My last one I grabbed and swapped the whole VB with one from the junkyard. Messy but easy job.

I believe the "marriage" terminology I read came from the need to program a new TCU to communicate with the existing ECM.
IMO, no reason to install a used electronic component, especially one requiring so much work to swap.
