So the fact that the passenger switch doesn't work either when it happens leads me to a circuit issue as well. Check all harness connections for green corrosion or water going back to power source. Check all the grounds so they are tight and corrosion free. Lastly check the main door connector on the A pillar for both scenarios. The motor armature could have a dead spot but corrosion would be my first bet. The FSM will be your friend in finding the connectors and while you are there look for wiring rodent damage too.
