If you have asphalt type shingles, the two biggest tells if they are done is if the ends are curling up on them and/or most of the granules are gone. The later is mostly from rain erosion and the former is caused by heat (in the attic that doesn’t have sufficient proper venting).

In Florida, most insurance companies require a new asphalt shingle style roof every 15 years to maintain coverage, 20 years iirc for a concrete tile roof.

It’s the heat here that kills the asphalt shingle roofs.
