Congrats on becoming a new father!
The Carfax report can be used as a guide, but I wouldn't put my full faith in this, as not everything can make it to this report. At the very least, I would have a trusted mechanic look at it.
And I think you've answered your own question based on the research you've done. IMO, a fast sports car and a newborn baby in the same car doesn't mix, and you already have the perfect vehicle for baby purposes (the Venza). You've already read up on the horror stories so why take that chance? I was born in the US and a proud American, but I will NEVER buy an American car - they don't hold their values, they usually come with more issues, not very good on gas, and overall just not good cars.
And the salesperson happened to be looking for a Z like yours? Total sales tactic. Do a search of Z's for sale in your area and I'm sure they are around.
Def. go test drive it and get it out of your system so you won't have any regrets, but if you're looking for a family car that's quick, there's plenty out there that are alot more reliable and affordable compared to the Camaro's.
