The only problem now is that I managed to mount the diff back to the car and these holes are now hard to access...and I *really* don't want to drop the diff again.
So the question now is - is it a problem to drill the holes on the half-shaft side and keep the threads on the flange side? This means the bolt will be threaded from a different side, but basically all else will be the same. The bolt head will only be a bit trickier to access, but nothing problematic. Am I missing some other problem with this or would this work? Thanks.

Sound like it won’t be a problem, as long as the thread engagement on the flange side is the same as on the half-shaft side.

Torque it to spec, throw a little loctite on there if you want and I wouldn’t expect any issues.
