I'd re-try grabbing the head of the stud with a pair of vice-grips. Usually a decent pair of vice-grips will be able to grab even something as thin as the stud head. If that doesn't work, you might try jamming a thin-bladed flat head screw driver between the stud head and the hub to stop the stud from spinning.
