I agree if you go to the race in person, it is an entirely different experience -- and personally, I'd recommend a short track (Richmond, Bristol, or Martinsville) are my favorites.
As for watching on TV, I subscribe to the Trackpass services which provide near real time timing & scoring as well as the ability to listen to the drivers & crew -- for me it makes TV viewing much more interesting.
