Late April might be OK, but I'd avoid making the trip in early April since you'll be dealing with lots of leftover winter gravel, sand and road salt, especially through the passes ... which aren't windshield or paint "friendly". You could also encounter an isolated late winter storm since the weather is quite variable in the mountains. If you're running summer tires, if could be "iffy" because of near or below freezing temperatures in the early morning as well as the evening. Here in Kimberley, I normally keep the car in hibernation until early May because of the above. Can't comment on insurance rates since it's been a few years since I resided in Alberta. However, experience suggests rates will be lower where you're headed. Trust this helps!
