John always fixed the car and let them pay on time. We were always super busy the first 6 days of the month (gubmint checks came on the first) and then super slow the rest of the month.
He had been in the hood for decades. No one every broke into the shop and it was rare when someone's tools walked away. When tools did 'disappear', either the parents' brought them back, holding onto the 'appropriator' by the ear or the cops were bringing them back from the pawn shop.
